Dealing With Eczema? What You Can Do To Ease Your Skin

Blog

Eczema is a skin condition in which you have extremely dry, irritated skin. It is usually itchy (much like a rash) and may also appear red in color. Eczema can be anywhere on the body, although most people have it on their arms, cheeks, elbows, knees or even on the back of the neck. Anyone can get eczema, from babies up to adults. There is no cure for eczema, but there are things you can do to help treat your eczema. If you haven't been diagnosed with eczema, you should seek a diagnosis and treatment by a dermatologist. If you have eczema, read on for things you can do at home to ease your skin.

1. Moisturizing Your Skin

Keeping your skin moisturized is going to help treat your eczema. Use moisturizer that helps to lock in the moisture. A thick, creamy moisturizer will help best. A moisturizer that is made for eczema should also be used. If you aren't able to find this type of moisturizer, use one that is made for sensitive skin and doesn't contain any fragrance. When moisturizing, be sure to do so immediately after showering or bathing to help hold in the moisture and prevent your skin from drying out.

2. Use A Humidifier

In winter months when your skin can dry out more in the dry weather, you should use a humidifier to increase the humidity and prevent drying your skin out. Use the humidifier when you sleep at night, or have a humidifier added to your HVAC system so your entire home is humidified. Avoiding extreme temperature changes can also help ease your skin.

3. Avoid Scratching

It may feel good to scratch your itchy eczema, but this is only going to worsen the irritation and cause further inflammation. The burning you feel when it is inflamed can sometimes be painful, which is why you should refrain from scratching your eczema patch. Keeping your nails clipped low can also help prevent you from scratching and causing too much irritation.

4. Use Gentle Cleansers

You should use gentle cleansers on your skin such as gentle soaps, shampoo/conditioner, facial washes, and other gentle cleansers, including laundry soap. Anything with fragrance in them could be harsh on your skin and cause irritation or inflammation. Use cleansers that are made for sensitive skin.

If you have eczema, it should be treated properly by your dermatologist. Use the tips above to help you ease your skin and prevent any further irritation.

But like any other organ, your skin can develop a number of health issues as time goes on. Maybe you develop acne, or perhaps you become affected by psoriasis or eczema. Dermatologists are there to help. This blog is all about doctors who specialize in dermatology, the work they do, and how they can help you get the skin you've always desired.
